How healthy is the average American diet?
The U.S. has the highest incidence of obesity in the world. The typical American diet is high in processed, overcooked, and packaged foods, with insufficient nutrients such as, vitamin A, calcium, and fiber and with too many calories and too much fat, sugar and sodium.
The common high levels of starch in processed food raise the sugar level in your blood and could eventually lead to insulin resistance. The body stores excess sugar as fat, creating the typical ‘spare tire’ around our waists.
An increasingly common major health risk factor is metabolic syndrome, a combination of overweight or obesity combined with today’s common sedentary life styles, stress, diabetes, coronary heart disease, increased blood pressure, or insulin resistance.
Consequences of poor Eating Habits
Obesity has alarmingly increased in the United States. Doctors generally agree that the health risk factor increases proportionally with being overweight. At 40% overweight you are twice as likely to die prematurely.
Obesity has been linked to top causes of death such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer, as well as serious medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease and gallstones, gout, and breathing problems, such as sleep apnea and asthma.
Weakness and fatigue, body aches, and emotional difficulties like depressions can be symptoms of premature aging resulting from poor eating habits. Losing weight can reduce the wear and tear on your joints and cause back problems. Even a modest weight loss of 5 to 20 pounds can result in significant health improvements.
Researchers project a trend of currently 65% of overweight adults in the United States to 75% by 2015.
One out of three American children is overweight and the trend is rising. Obesity has been resulting in higher medical bills and will continue to rise. Trends of increasing work stress, depression, and general unhappiness are common factors of overeating and too little exercise.
